They used to circulate demeaning and sadistic cartoons of their political enemies, comparable to the endless Internet memes circulated by American liberals and conservatives alike. In Cambodia, this hateful rhetoric led to an acrimonious civil war – which allowed the communist Khmer Rouge to take power. The hate, vengefulness, and paranoia lived on within the regime, pitting leaders, soldiers, and people against each other. The end result proved catastrophic.
